Pain in adults with intellectual disabilities.

چکیده
During the last 2 decades, the number of studies focusing on the experience, assessment, and treatment of pain in older persons with dementia has increased considerably [30]. One major conclusion of those studies [30] is that pain is still undertreated in this population due to the complexity of reliable pain assessment, which is a prerequisite for effective pain treatment. Unfortunately, these pain studies do not address other groups of persons who suffer from intellectual disabilities (IDs), such as Down syndrome (DS). The lack of knowledge on the experience, assessment, and treatment of pain in IDs is more remarkable still for 3 reasons: (1) persons with IDs may suffer from more painful conditions than controls do [29]; (2) the prevalence of age-related painful conditions is increasing due to increases in estimated life expectancy [5]; and (3) the neuropathology of IDs affects pain-related gray and white matter (Table 1), which may alter pain experience. The goal of the present topical review is, therefore, to gain more insight into the experience of pain in adults with IDs by (1) addressing epidemiological studies on the presence of musculoskeletal disorders in relation to clinical pain in people with IDs; (2) discussing the available experimental human studies on pain in IDs; and (3) presenting theoretical considerations about possible alterations in pain experience in IDs, based on the neuropathology characteristic of the various subtypes.

Quantitative sensory testing of temperature, pain, and touch in adults with Down syndrome.
The spinothalamic pathway mediates sensations of temperature, pain, and touch. These functions seem impaired in children with Down syndrome (DS), but have not been extensively examined in adults. The objective of the present study was to compare the spinothalamic-mediated sensory functions between adults with DS and adults from the general population and to examine in the DS group the relations...
متن کاملDoing nothing: adults with disabilities with no daily activities and their siblings.
A significant concern of parents and professionals is that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities will go without regular educational-vocational activities. The authors examined predictors of such inactivity in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as how inactivity related to their sibling's well-being and the sibling relationship. Participants ...

Adults with intellectual disabilities need thoughtful, well-coordinated primary care from family physicians. However, evidence-based screening recommendations are lacking. We examined screening recommendations for common preventable conditions using the US Preventative Service Task Force guidelines. We also reviewed the literature about the prevalence of these conditions in adults with intellec...

متن کاملAn integrative review of multicomponent weight management interventions for adults with intellectual disabilities
BACKGROUND Obesity is more prevalent in people with intellectual disabilities and increases the risk of developing serious medical conditions. UK guidance recommends multicomponent weight management interventions (MCIs), tailored for different population groups. METHODS An integrative review utilizing systematic review methodology was conducted to identify the types of MCIs delivered to adult...

BACKGROUND Interpersonal conflict is a source of stress and contributes to poor mental health in people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Understanding the contexts in which conflict typically occurs can better equip services to help people with such difficulties. However, existing studies into the contexts of conflict have included participants with wide-ranging ages and may not...
